The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested a suspect, Udeme Sunday Stephen, over his alleged involvement in the attack on the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and some chieftains of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Benin City, Edo State.
According to a report by Channels Television, the suspect was apprehended after what security sources described as a thorough investigation into the incident that occurred last Tuesday.
THEWILL had earlier reported that Obi and several party leaders were attacked at the residence of a former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and ADC chieftain, John Odigie-Oyegun, in the Edo State capital.
The National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, had disclosed that the attack took place shortly after Obi and his entourage returned from the ADC secretariat, where they formally welcomed the 2023 Labour Party governorship candidate for Edo State, Olumide Akpata, into the party.
Tanko described the incident as unfortunate and condemnable, urging security agencies to ensure that those behind the attack are brought to justice. He stressed that political activities should be conducted in a peaceful atmosphere devoid of intimidation or violence.
Although the DSS has yet to issue an official statement detailing the suspect’s specific role, sources indicate that investigations are ongoing and that further arrests may be made as the probe progresses.
